Carol Buckman
Carol was raised at True Light Chinese Mission in NYC. So began her desire to reach refugees and immigrants. While teaching at Trinity, Hicksville, Long Island, she met Vicar Allan Buckman and that led to raising 3 children in a primitive setting in SE Nigeria as missionaries. The people were animistic but it was common to see rich and poor roll out their mats to pray to Allah. Returning to St. Louis in 1977 Allan served in Synod’s mission department, staying connected with people around the world. In 1999, Carol heard of Christians from Nigeria meeting at Messiah Lutheran Church in the heart of the refugee community. Struggling to find safe housing Messiah’s warm welcome laid the groundwork for Christian Friends of New Americans (CFNA). CFNA moved to a 100-year-old building in a low-income, high-crime area. The finest volunteers are attracted to and have compassion for those newcomers who struggle to live here. Carol is involved in a variety of programs to connect all family members.
